HVAC Installation – Is It A DIY Job
With the high costs of HVAC installations, it can be tempting to forgo professional help and install residential HVAC systems alone. The task may prove too technical and beyond the abilities of the average do-it-yourselfer. However, for those determined to go it alone, there are a few steps that are absolutely necessary in HVAC installation. AC Repair New Braunfels here
Already have ductwork in place.
If the house receiving the new HVAC system already has a system of ductwork in place from previous units, installation is quite simple. First, purchase a unit that matches the size of the replaced HVAC unit to ensure proper capacity. Second, disconnect the power and remove all wiring and duct connections; note which wire connects to which terminal and which duct connections fit where. Third, replace the unit and reconnect all wires and connections. Fourth, return power and enjoy the new HVAC unit. Obviously, it might be more technical than this, but all new HVAC systems will come with a manual and installation guide.
Installing Duct Work
If the new HVAC system is going to be installed in a home that has never had central air, there is a great deal more work involved. The intrepid amateur installer must develop a plan for installing ductwork throughout the building. This should be done with an expert or a company that can draft a system on an existing floor plan that will account for all obstructions and building codes. This can cost a few hundred dollars, but as HVAC technicians train for years to properly install ducts, and improper installation can cost thousands in repairs later, the cost is worth it. Sticking to this plan will help mitigate any complications from going it alone.
Making Decisions
Next, the do-it-yourself homeowner should decide how many zones he or she wants in the house. He or she will have to determine whether there should be separate temperature settings for the upstairs and downstairs or the front and the back of the house. Deciding on the number of zones will determine how much additional electrical work will be needed to install the temperature controls. The homeowner will also have to select the proper size of the HVAC unit corresponding to the cooling capacity demanded by the space. This can be decided by calculating the tonnage of the house.
Installing up-to-code
Finally, the unit can be installed. Wires will need to run from the unit to the temperature controls in all house zones, requiring some proficiency with electrical work. Everything must correspond to building codes, so the final hookup will require a professional to be legal. A building inspector may also be needed to check that the electrical work is correct and any natural gas connections are safely connected. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so always consult a building inspector before disconnecting or modifying gas lines.
Anyone can install residential HVAC systems. However, mistakes can be more costly than having a professional undertake the project. Any large-scale project should be carefully weighed against the costs and benefits of doing it yourself.
